The Yarra Valley House by JAM Architects was featured in Issue 17 of The Local Project.
Yarra Valley House is a self-sustainable three bedroom, three bathroom family home located in the lush eucalyptus forests of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges. The residence was constructed several years after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires destroyed the original home and much of the surrounding landscape. The new design embodies a deep sense of spatial and environmental connection, with a focus on textural materiality.
Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the off-grid home overlooks a spring-fed pond and a natural bush amphitheatre. It is defined by three interconnecting pavilions; a central hub featuring the main living spaces and Master bedroom, flanked by two pavilions offering self-contained
accommodation.
A carefully selected palette of natural and tactile materials creates an harmonious dialogue between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. Rammed earth walls reference the hues and solidity of the landscape, while floors, walls and ceilings are lined in timber recycled from the site.
Grounded by a deep connection to nature, Yarra Valley House is a home among the gum trees – a home that connects people and the environment.
