Located in the heart of Footscray’s CBD, the rejuvenation of the existing Footscray Plaza Shopping Centre is a key component of the central Footscray urban redevelopment plans.
The project was developed in two stages allowing the major works to occur whilst the retail spaces remained trading.
Stage 1 comprised of five levels of 280 residential apartments configured around a courtyard, all located over the existing building. The project developed a lightweight structural system allowing the additional 5 levels – carefully strengthening the existing columns and footings and increasing the buildings lateral stability
The apartments have significant views over key parts of Melbourne including the CBD and Port Phillip Bay.
Stage 2 re-imagines the existing shopping centre with a new supermarket, re-arrangement of the connections between retail spaces and new retail activities. The street level design revitalises the ground level and the retail corner of Albert & Paisley Streets. Urban artwork is integrated on the façade of the existing car park.
