SMITH STREET, COLLINGWOOD  The Smith Street project “Smith & Co.”, is a complex arrangement of retail, commercial and residential spaces on a large 6000m2 site in the heart of the busy inner-Melbourne shopping strip of Collingwood. The historic site is home of the original G.J. Coles department store, and in its new guise, now houses 4500m2 of Coles supermarket. A further 1000m2 of retail spaces is incorporated on the ground level. Above is a series of landscaped courtyard spaces each with their own identity (European Garden, Indigenous Garden and Edible Garden) surrounded by varied scaled buildings housing over 230 residential apartments. Below is the basement that includes the operational utilities associated with the supermarket and over 420 car spaces.
The existing streetscape varies in scale and form significantly, however can be characterized by a significant number of strip shops contained in historic buildings. The design seeks to break down the scale of the site and buildings with a series of contemporary facades each having a different composition and materials, heights, and forms – setting up a rhythm similar to that of the heritage street.
